Hi friends! Join me for a trip up Minnesota’s north shore and a few of my favorite spots. The beauty of the north shore is that there is so much to explore. I have been here over a handful of times the last 5 years, it is where my husband and I got engaged, where we have taken friends to visit, and where we have escaped for many weekends unplugged – truly my happy place. I love that there are so many hikes, restaurants and hidden gems, you can kind of tailor your trip to what interests you! And you’ll be able to go many times, and try something new each time.
For this trip, I took one of my good friends up for her first time! We camped at Tettegouche State Park and did some hiking, exploring and enjoyed delicious food and coffee.
Grab a moose-inspired coffee at Mocha Moose
This was our first stop up the shore as it is located in Two Harbors. They have many coffee drinks, and a cozy interior if you want to enjoy your coffee inside.
Take a hike at Tettegouche State Park
This is one of the more popular state parks along the north shore. But, I love these two hikes and their scenery: Shovel Point and High Falls.
Enjoy a World’s Best Donut in Grand Marais and Take in the Harbor
We got here around 1:30 in the afternoon and they close at 2 and they only had their sugar or cinnamon sugar cake donuts left, so I would recommend getting here in the morning if you want more options! The classic donuts we had were absolutely delicious though!
Eat Frybread Tacos at Hungry Hippie Tacos
This was my first time trying this place, and I am kicking myself that I waited so long! You have to try their original frybread tacos with your choice of meat and taco fixens. The chips & queso was also super yummy. I will definitely be back!
Enjoy a brew at Voyageur Brewing Company
Cure your caffeine-fix at Java Moose
A favorite spot! I always get a maple latte – hot or iced. It just feels like it fits the up north-cozy-quintessential vibe all too well.
Chase a waterfall at Caribou Falls
If you’re looking for a shorter hike with a large payoff, this is for you! I believe this hike was only 1 or 1.5 miles round trip and it takes you the bottom of Caribou Falls and it is STUNNING. I loved feeling so small surrounded by the high rocky cliffs and waterfall. Not busy at all either. Would definitely recommend this one!
Fuel up at Schroeder Baking Company
Another place I am bummed I waited so long to try. Their pastries looked phenomenal, but we opted for a breakfast sandwich and black coffee for some pre-hike fuel. I love that they have the option of the breakfast sandwich for some good protein and nutrients vs. strictly pastries. They also had pizzas, sandwiches and more for lunch ideas!
Stare in awe at the summit of Carlton Peak
This hike is incredible. It starts out flat and a nice leisurely walk through the woods and on narrow, plank boardwalks and then the second half is full of tree roots, rocks, and inclined hiking. So fun! To reach the summit, it does involve a little bit of climbing up some rocks, but nothing too challenging. The view is so worth it. This is where you will park to do this hike!
Walk along Black Sand Beach
A fascinating stop! Grab a picnic lunch or a coffee and explore this beautiful beach.
