Living a simple + slow life is something I strive for and have been creating the past several years, learn more about my heart and intention behind it here. Living a slow life to me feels like peaceful mornings, staying connected with the Lord and with those around me and the moments I’m in each and everyday. I think it’s a good thing to do at the start of each season, or any time really. It can be so easy to go through life without taking the time to really *think* about what we are doing and all that is going on in our lives.
If you’re feeling like your calendar is a little too full, lucky for you, there are still ways you can find time to slow down in the everyday. Let’s talk about the importance of slowing down and the practical ways to do so this season or anytime.
The Importance of Slowing Down
There are a lot of benefits that come with slowing down in life. It can bring more joy, allow us to focus on what’s truly important, and even help us stay healthy, mentally and physically. When we are living life rushed or from one thing to the next, we miss some special moments, more easily take things for granted, and can be more prone to comparison.
How to Slow Down
1. Be present
Over the past year I have been sitting with the bible verse Matthew 6:34 which says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” God commands us not to worry about tomorrow, and with that, I think helps keep our focus on the present. Whether we have anxiety for the future or are constantly looking for what’s next, I encourage you to stay focused on TODAY.
2. Focus on the people in front of you
This can be a tough pill to swallow, but it really can be so easy. When you are with someone at dinner or with a group of friends, be with them. Meaning, let’s try leaving our phones in our purses and waiting until we are done spending time with those in front of us to text or call the person on the other end of the phone.
3. Get outside
Going on a walk in nature or sitting outside on a patio or deck has a way of creating a slower pace to life, even if its just for a few moments. These are great times to make the time to think, when you may not have much time otherwise during your day.
4. Do something creative
Making time for something creative or a small hobby we enjoy helps us slow down and enjoy the moment we’re in.
5. Be aware of your surroundings
This sounds super silly, but it honestly helps me slow down and be present. My top trick is if you’re on a walk or even inside your home, take a second to take in all your surroundings coordinating with each of your senses. What do you smell? What do you see? What can you touch? What can you hear? What can you taste? It is actually kind of fun to get your brain working in these ways, and take it all in.
6. Practice silence
Another easier said than done one! It’s amazing how calm you can feel when you intentionally create silence. This can help slow your thoughts down, and your breathing too. And hopefully help so you realize you don’t need to feel so rushed all the time.
7. Make time for fun
When was the last time you carved time in your schedule that was just for fun? Something you genuinely enjoy doing? Just because we get busy, doesn’t mean we need to pass things like this up and not enjoy life in the season we’re in! Go bowling, jump in the pool, go to an amusement park, go grab yourself a coffee, watch your favorite movie.
8. Spend a few minutes noticing your breath
I’m not big into meditation but I think it is fascinating to slow down and physically feel your lungs filling up with air, being grateful for healthy lungs, and breathing back out. Taking the time to notice your breath brings your attention to that and only that. It is an easy way to sit down and be intentional for a few minutes.
9. Savor your morning coffee/drink of choice
I will say this as long as I live but one of the best sights is the steam off of a cup of hot coffee. It is so peaceful. Taking the time to mindfully notice and savor these small everyday moments is a great way to learn how to slow down. Two more easy ways to enjoy this time is to savor the warmth of the mug in your hands or to practice noticing and appreciating the flavor of your coffee and the way it tastes.
10. Add some white space to your schedule or say no to some commitments
Take a critical look at your calendar and prioritize your activities and commitments. It’s okay to say no to some things to leave some room for you/your family to just be. If something is not adding a lot of value to your life, consider reprioritizing your time and energy.
Now tell me, which one will you set your mind to practicing this autumn season? Let me know in the comments!
