Outfit: Joggers / Knit Beanie
Let’s talk winter fashion! I am all about comfy and casual all year round, and winter is no different. Living in Minnesota with subzero temperatures and snow, I gravitate toward cozy pieces, athleisure, and of course, neutral colors.
Winter Capsule Wardrobe – What to Wear: Winter 2022
As with every other season and capsule wardrobes as a whole, what I hope to encourage you to do is to mix and match what you already own to create many stylish outfits that you love! And then each year, think of what your closet may be missing, and consider adding a few new staples to enhance your closet further. My version of capsule wardrobes aren’t restrictive and I don’t set aside a designated amount of clothes for the season, but rather, my entire closet is just simpler, therefore, my options are already slimmer.
Let’s get into it! Winter closet essentials:
WINTER TOPS
My go-to top in the winter is a sweater. Similar to fall, I find having a variety of styles/colors/lengths of sweaters and cardigans to choose from and mixing and matching is key. For winter, I will rotate in my heavier sweaters, and turtleneck ones. I love wearing my go-to red sweater the month of December, and dark green for the entire winter season. I stay away from trendier sweaters or pieces and stick with classics I can wear year after year. This is my favorite retailer to purchase basic/staple sweaters from.
WINTER LAYERS: turtlenecks, flannels, bodysuits, shackets
My winter capsule wardrobe also includes a lot of layering pieces. You can often find me in a turtleneck with a sweater or flannel over it, or a bodysuit layered with a cardigan. I absolutely layer for walks and hiking, and I will for casual, everyday looks some days as well. These extra layers are essential, and can still be stylish!
BOTTOMS
I stick to darker wash denim and black jeans in the winter to keep things simple. I am considering investing in this pair of black Madewell jeans my friend recommended.
WINTER LOUNGEWEAR & ATHLEISURE
A lot of my loungewear and athleisure comes out in the winter. I leave the house more in the fall, so during the winter months, I like to be extra comfortable while working from home or on the weekends. These joggers are a recent purchase (also pictured in the featured image of this post) and I can’t stop wearing them – I call them my “put together” joggers haha.
WINTER JACKETS AND COATS
I have 3-4 winter coats in rotation. A classic, long black coat, a shorter dark green puffer jacket (similar), my grandma’s black coat with faux fur (for dressier occasions – this one is similar), and a lighter weight overcoat similar to this one. My best tip is to take a good look at how you spend your time in the winter months and what things you will need which coat/jacket for – my categories are broke down like this: outdoor activities, walks, church and dinners out with family and friends, and work and errands/everyday life. WINTER BOOTS
Winter boots are similar to coats/jackets in the sense that you should take into consideration what type of boots you will use for what occasion. My categories are: walks/hiking, everyday/errands, and dressier occasions. My top three most worn are my muck boots, blundstones, and these platform boots (for some reason I love the look of a taller black heel to dress up a simple winter outfit). I have heard great things about this style of Sorel boot for everyday life and for walks/hikes.
WINTER ACCESSORIES
Hats, mittens, socks, scarves, and slippers. I stick with neutral colors for these so they can match any of my coats/jackets. Read more details outerwear recommendations in this post.
