Ever since we got married, and with working from home full time, I’ve loved getting to take care of our home. I enjoy keeping it clean, and building habits and routines around cleaning. Like most people (or maybe not), the last thing I want to do on the weekends is clean. While I am fortunate to be home all day, I’ve found a schedule where I commit to cleaning 15-20 minutes five days a week so I don’t have to on the weekends! Granted, some weeks don’t always work out, but I put my best effort forward in making it happen.
A successful weekday-only cleaning routines I have found relies on two categories of cleaning tasks: ones that you repeat every day and ones that you do weekly/monthly/seasonally.
Which is what I will explain next. Here’s my simple cleaning routine breakdown:
Daily
- Wipe down kitchen counters after every meal
- Wash dishes/load dishwasher after every meal
- Empty the dishwasher
- Empty the trash as needed
- Clean stove top after cooking
- Sweep or use a cordless vacuum on the kitchen floor and any other heavily trafficked spots, rugs, couches, etc.
- Wipe down wet bathroom counters. Love these microfiber cloths!
Weekly
- Bathrooms
- Bed sheets
- Laundry – I love using these dryer balls and have been loving Far & Wild essentials oils on them to give them an extra lovely scent when coming out of the dryer. You can use my code MACKENZIE20 to get 20% off your order of oils.
- Vacuum & dust – I alternate weekly since we have 2 levels in our home
Bi-Weekly
- Wipe down appliances
- Clean kitchen floor
- Wipe down light switches and door knobs
Monthly
- Dust baseboards and vents
- Wipe down garbage can
- Clean inside microwave and oven
- Wipe down fridge shelving
- Wipe down inside of bathroom medicine cabinet
Seasonally
- Pantry and fridge – clear out expired items
- Wash comforter
- Wash windows inside & out
- Clean throw pillows & blankets
3 of my best tips for cleaning:
#1 – Create your routine based on what works for YOU and your lifestyle. Finding a cleaning routine or schedule online is great and all, but take time to think about when you will have the time and energy to clean and stick with that.
#2 – Doing a little bit everyday takes away the overwhelm of feeling like you have to deep clean the whole darn house a weekend a month or something. But again, whatever works for you is always best! Plus, if it’s one thing everyday, then you can use your work break to complete that little task of the day, and it just adds to your productivity level of each day! Feels good 🙂
#3 – For laundry, I typically do it twice a week and have learned that it’s ok if the days vary each week. It all depends on what your week and weekend has looked like and how you need to continue for the week.
